CANCER COUNCIL’S

SUNSSMART PROGRAM

Cancer Council’s SunSmart program leads the world in skin cancer prevention. Our aim is to reduce skin cancer incidence and mortality through education, prevention and early detection programs.

WA has the second highest rate of skin cancer in the country. This is mainly due to overexposure to the sun. For this reason, it is important to use sun protection when spending time outside.

When the UV Index reaches 3, it is high enough to cause skin damage and therefore sun protection should be used.

We recommend these five simple ways to protect yourself. It’s important to do as many as you can:

  1. Slip on protective clothing — Make sure you choose close-weave fabric with a high UVF protection factor that covers as much skin as possible, choose a shirt with a collar.
  2. Slop on 30 SPF sunscreen — It needs to be broad spectrum, water resistant and to meet the Australian standard. Put it on thoroughly 20 minutes before going into the sun and regularly reapply it.
  3. Slap on a hat — Choose one that provides as much shade as possible to your face, neck, head, ears and eyes; broad-brimmed, bucket hats are the best.
  4. Seek shade —This is one of the most effective and simplest ways to reduce sun exposure, and is best if the shade casts a dark shadow.
  5. Slide on some sunglasses — Close fitting wrap-around styles are best. Look for glasses that carry the Australian Standard.

Remember UV 3 is the key. You can find the UV index at MyUV.com.au.
